John Gokongwei: Love your work. Never stop learning.

John Gokongwei Jr., the JG Summit chairman emeritus has recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the University of San Carlos, Cebu City last October 18, 2018.

In his speech he narrates how he started as a young entrepreneur making Php20 per day by working longer and harder than the other. He also then stresses how he still wakes up early and love what he is doing at the age of 92.

Today, I am 92 years old. I still wake up early and I still love to do what I’m doing. I still know everything what is going on in my company.

He also shares his wisdom in succeeding life:

I always tell my children, my grandchildren, and my colleagues: Love your work. Work hard for it. Love your family. Love your country. Never stop learning. And always look back and be grateful to where you came from.

Here is the full text of John Gokongwei’s speech:

It’s always special to be back here in Cebu, my hometown. And it is extra special to be here at my Alma Mater, University of San Carlos. I flew here this morning on the airline I named after this city I love, Cebu Pacific. I went to school here at the University of San Carlos for my primary school and my high school. I was valedictorian in grade school, and I was number one in my class in high school. Because of that, I received free tuition at school. I remember Fr. GRIES who taught us English Literature, and Mr. Quibilan, the principal. I especially remember Fr. Smith, who was the disciplinarian, because one day he caught me running in front of his office, and I had to stand in the corner for one hour. When I was 13 years old, my father died, leaving me to take care of my mother, my four brothers, and my sister. At the time, my youngest brother, James, was only nine months old. I took care of them all. Because the family has always been my priority. It was here in Cebu that I first earned my first few pesos. I used to wake up way before dawn to ride my bicycle to the public market many kilometers away. I set up a little table at the market to sell spools of thread, bars of soap, and candles. I earned about twenty pesos a day by working longer and harder than everybody else. But it didn’t matter since I really loved my work. I loved being an ENTREPRENEUR. And so all through the years, I stayed as an entrepreneur, loving what I did and working hard. And always learning from the school of life. Years later, when I was married to my lovely wife Bia, and had six children of my own, I finally had the means to go back to school. I went to De La Salle University to get my MBA. It took me four years since I was a working student. When I got my diploma it was one of the proudest moments of my life. Then I went to Harvard in 1972 for 14 weeks to take the advance management program. Today, I am 92 years old. I still wake up early and I still love to do what I’m doing. I still know everything what is going on in my company. I still love to learn and am always reading books, and now, online stories in this new digital age. I always tell my children, my grandchildren, and my colleagues: Love your work. Work hard for it. Love your family. Love your country. Never stop learning. And always look back and be grateful to where you came from. Thank you, University of San Carlos, for being a large part of who I am today. Thank you for this lifetime achievement award.

For less than Php500, we were able to have breakfast, lunch and dinner plus more!

After trying-out what Booky’s Bogo using their Php1,000 worth of savings (please check-out previous blog here), we decided to challenge ourselves again - All Day Meals using Booky’s BOGO. And to our surprise, we didn’t just succeed to cover Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, we were able to have milk tea and coffee 🙂 . This time we used my friend’s account since mine was already fully used-up.

Same as before, we hit the gym early in the morning at SM Megamall and started our delicious journey for the day.

Breakfast: Kenny Rogers Roasters
Price: Php140
Offer: Kani and Mango Salad
Description: Romaine lettuce, tomato carrots, white onion strips, ripe mangoes, kani and sesame dressing
Location: UG/F SM Megamall, Building A

Perfect after-workout meal! All the ingredients were fresh and freshly cut, especially because we ordered it before the mall opens 🙂

Pro tip : Kenny Rogers Roasters in SM Megamall opens as early as 6:00 am. If you are a member of one of the fitness center there, you might want to visit them for breakfast since they have a lot of healthy offers.

Lunch: Sunnies Cafe
Price: Php280
Offer: Pork Bowl
Description: Crispy glazed pork belly, soy egg, scallion brown rice, homemade pickles
Location: 2/F SM Megamall, Bridgeway

We already tried Sunnies Cafe before and we never go back, until this time. Mainly because their food are pricey. The taste of their food is good but not good for the price, and serving is not that generous to compensate.

But this time, we are happy for the price that we paid since we were able to get a buy 1 get 1 deal. I realized, Booky could really help some of us with this kind of dilemma.

Merienda: Gong Cha
Price: Php90
Offer: Banana Milk
Description: Fruit-based drink added with banana syrup and plant-based creamer
Location: 2/F SM Megamall, Atrium

I could say that Gong Cha was the most awaited item on our list. We were set to avail the Gong Cha Milk Brown Sugar, which was beautifully advertised on their social media, it really looks delicious as if you could taste it just by staring at its photo. But unfortunately, it was sold-out that day 😦 . Which brought our expectation really low, we rather chose the Banana Milk. And since our expectations were already muted, we were surprised! It doesn’t look instagrammable but it tastes good, it tastes real and no hint of artificial banana 🙂

Dinner: Max’s Restaurant
Price: Php169
Offer: Chicken Sisig Rice Bowl with Sago’t Gulaman
Description: A generous serving of chicken sisig with special sauce. Served with a sunny side up egg and topped with green chilis. Max’s classic sago’t gulaman.
Location: 3/F SM Megamall, Building A

This is the most “sulit” of all the meals we had that day. Rice+Ulam+Egg+Drink for Php84.50 per person. A deliciously cooked and complete meal cheaper than the fast food price point. What more can we ask for? Just thank you, Booky!

Coffee: Nitro7 Coffee and Tea Bar
Price: Php135
Offer: Large Chocolate Macadamia
Description: Nitro Cold Brew coffee with chocolate and macadamia syrup
Location: 4/F SM Megamall, Building B

And to end the day, we again hang-out for coffee. This is our first time to try Nitro7 and we are now a regular customer 🙂 Their coffee is the kind of coffee that is true to itself – BOLD and STRONG. You’ll definitely get the kick that you are looking for when drinking coffee.

We spent a total of Php814 or Php407 per person for a full day meal plus milk tea and coffee. Now, we are not just thinking, we are definitely availing Booky Prime Membership.

Try it for yourself too! Trying-out Booky app won’t hurt, specially with their free trial that comes with Php1,000 worth savings.

ARE YOU EXPERIENCING CAREER TRANSITION?

Chapter 1: You Are Bound to Begin a New Journey

Career transition is painful. Be it caused by unfortunate events or your own decision making, especially if you seem to be soaring high prior to the transition. You acknowledge that there’s so much more to learn, but you thought you’re strong enough to adjust to whatever comes your way, as long as you’re patient, hardworking and maintain a positive attitude. Then along the way, there’s turbulence, sudden lost of sight and before you knew it you’ve already lose path - you know longer know where you are heading to.

During this time you will feel discouraged because in spite of your best efforts, you can’t seem to land to where you think you should be or worse you can’t secure a job interview. The hurt and despair of being unemployed or taking a step-back in your career after being part of the “big leagues” of life are far more devastating since we are not just taking into account the loss of income but loss of career, loss of self-respect and loss of identity.

If we allow our despair to be a part of our daily life and let our emotions unchecked, failure in career path will lead to self-pity, self-blame and depression,

Most often, you’ll try to seek refuge through prayer, but during this times, you might caught yourself asking the following in your prayer: “How much more Lord?”, “How much longer must I wait for a breakthrough?”, “If you love me, why are these things happening to me?”.

Then you will start to examine the past and think of all the wrongs you’ve done. You will be tempted to deny that God still cares for you, because somehow your mind will tell you: ‘You’ve blown it.’

Let me tell you two things -

First: If you think you everything is being taken away from you because of the things you’ve done in the past – think of Peter. Peter denied Jesus (Matthew 26:74) and wept bitterly (Mathew 26:75). But that was not the end of Peter’s story. He find his strength in Jesus and the Lord restore him. He was able to got up and fulfill the assigned path as the “fisher of men”.

Second: God knows what you are going through. He knew everything that will take place even before we are conceived. He knew all the painful season that we need to bear for us to be ready for the biggest blessings of our lives. He sometime allow despair to come our way for us to grow closer to Him. He disarm us and let us feel weak or helpless, so he could help us. He let our plans fail, so he could make things happen according to His will.

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and future.

The fact that you are still breathing means God is not done with you yet. A major set-back or hitting rock bottom does not mean your journey is over, in fact it may have just began!

Trust his plans. Restore your confidence with the Lord and remember that He is always faithful to us.

Buy 1 Get 1 : We Tried Booky’s BOGO

So we tried Booky’s free trial that comes with Php1,000 worth of savings.

It was August 27 – Holiday, Monday and Payday was so near yet so far but cravings was so strong. So me and my friend came up with a very creative way to spend the day. We download the Booky app and signed-up for free trial. We’ve decided to spend the Php1,000 worth of coupons on Buy One Get One (BOGO) so it would be easier for the two of us to split the bills.

We started the day with light breakfast at home, hit the gym (Firness First) at SM Megamall and spend the rest of the day trying out the following:

Pure Nectar

Price: Php150
Offer: Berry or Orange Passion Fruit
Description: Choose between Berry Passion (mix of strawberry & passion fruit) and Orange Passion (mix of orange & passion fruit)

Perfect drink before or after work-out. They are accommodating enough to let us have each of the flavors.

Chelsea

Price: Php440
Offer: Truffled Mushroom Cream & Bacon Pasta with Bottomless Iced Tea
Description: Truffle pasta with mushroom cream topped with bacon and mushroom slices. Served with a bottomless Iced Tea
Location: G/F SM Mega Fashion Hall

This one tastes great. Serving is pretty generous for one person plus the bottomless Iced Tea! Although I can’t seem to find my self ordering it on a regular price, quite pricey for me. Yay for BOGO! 🙂

Offer: Sorbe-Toasts
Description: Creamy soft-serve ice cream with your choice of toppings. Served on a bed of warm brioche french toast cubes. Flavors to choose from – Chocolate Caramel, Chocolate Popcorn, Strawberry Fruit Cereal

Love how beautiful they serve everything at The Lost Bread. We figured ice cream is the best dessert to clean our palate from the sumptuous pasta that we had for lunch. And we were right except for the french toast that comes with it that may turn out quite heavy for a dessert. You might want to skip it if you had rice meal.

Coffee Project: A picturesque café

“Instagram-able” was the first word that pop into my mind as soon as I stepped into Coffee Project at Worldwide Corporate Center along Shaw Boulevard. This place will instantly capture the coffee-shop-lover in you! After all, it has everything we are looking for a café - great coffee, good food, fast WiFi and a very nice ambiance.

FOOD 💎💎💎💎💎

Their coffee taste great, and sells within the average price point

The wide range of their food menu impressed me, they offer cakes and pastries, breakfast meals, pasta, salads and sandwiches. Look like a full restaurant menu.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

Beef Tapa (Php235)
Carbonara (Php195)
White Mocha (Hot), Caramel Vanilla Frappe, Banana Bread and Triple Chocolate Cake

PRICE 💎💎💎💎

I believe their price range is pretty good compare to other cafés considering their generous serving size.

SERVICE 💎💎💎💎

The service is the usual 10-15 minutes serving time. But I love how they print the WiFi password along with the receipt of your order, no need for you to ask!

WiFi speed is pretty fast considering the fact that we’ve been there during peak hours. However, access is limited to upto 2 hours only.

AMBIANCE 💎💎💎💎💎

Their artistic interior is perfect for persons that are into creative writing, content creation or book reading. The ambiance is homey and relax but at the same time modern, that makes it suitable for meetings, get-together, studying and de-stressing. And even though most of the times they are fully occupied, it never feel cramped.

Overall, I could say that visiting this place is a must! So go ahead, take a sip of their coffee and take your insta-wothy selfie! Their 24hour service also make them stand-out among the others.

55 Pesos Menu of #Pound by Todd English

So, we tried the one-dollar or 55 pesos menu of #Pound by Todd Enlgish in Megamall Fashion Hall, without so much expectation (because of the price), but to our surprise we were delighted to everything we ordered!

The serving was of course, smaller than the regular. What amazes us is that the quality, flavor and taste is no less than superb!

Here is a peak on what’s in their menu:

TE Slider Burger
Tomato Cream Pasta
OMG Chocolate Milk Shake
Onion Cube
